For this narrow styled nightstand the drawer size is dependent on the maximum overall width; Stephen will then work out the inner drawer size from this. If this comes out too small for it to be 'useful' he may suggest keeping an open shelf above the cupboard.

Please bear in mind that the plinth running around the bottom edge will add a 1-1½" to the overall width; if you would prefer this can be left off.
